Competences

Outcome Competences for Practitioners in Infection Prevention and Control

These competences, developed by the Infection Prevention Society, will assist practitioners to continually increase their existing knowledge, understanding and skills to deliver improved quality of care for our patients by relieving the burden of disease and avoidable illness through healthcare associated infections.

The competences are designed to be a multi-purpose tool to support and inform service and strategic planning, workforce development and management at an operational and strategic level.

They also provide guidance for education and training programmes.

They can therefore be used by a variety of people including:

  • Experts within an organisation driving forward the safety and quality agenda
  • Health or social care managers
  • Educational commissioners or providers
  • Practitioners working within Infection Prevention and Control
  • Practitioners contributing to Infection Prevention and Control

These competences will help to inform your development, no matter what your starting point is. You might already be close to achieving all of the competences or might be a long way off and have a lot of development to undertake.

IPS Audit & Surveillance Competences

The audit and surveillance competences have been aligned to the Outcome Competences for Practitioners in Infection Prevention and Control.

The audit and surveillance competences may be used as a self assessment tool or as part of the professional development planning process in collaboration with line managers for those healthcare workers who are operating in audit and surveillance supporting roles.

Specialist practitioners may choose to use the competences to plan further development in specific areas of audit and surveillance as part of the outcome framework.
