C.diff risk stratification & protection

Hello all,

our CDI rates are continuing to rise. We test a lot more than many other Trusts, however, we also have an increase not accounted for by testing. Does anyone seek to identify those most at risk for C.diff and do any preventative work? Is anyone trying pre-biotics or other treatments?

Hi Sue!

There are a few initiatives that significantly helped in reducing our CDI rates. We initiated a two-step C.diff testing to distinguish between active infection or colonization. The first step in the two-step sequence is a NAAT/PCR that detects C.diff DNA. If the specimen is DNA positive, the second step is a toxin assay that detects if the bacteria is producing Toxins A&B. We’ve also switched to using a sporicidal cleaning product for our primary cleaning chemical throughout the hospital. Additionally, we partnered with our antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist to provide clinician education and alternative antibiotic recommendations for known high-risk antibiotics that can lead to C.diff.

Hope this helps!
