We have recently been made aware that anywhere medication is being stored there needs to be a record of atmospheric room temperature? Is this being carried out elsewhere? We do record fridge temperature daily for medication that needs to be stored in the fridge.
Room temperature recording
Hi Susanne
We record room temperatures in our dental clinics in the rooms/cupboards where medication is stored. Actual, minimum and maximum temperatures are recorded and Lead Pharmacist is alerted if above 25C for a 2 week period, advice is then given on need to relocate the medications or replace them.
Hope this helps a bit
Here at South East Coast Ambulance, our drug rooms and fridges are monitored by a system called ‘Monika’. There is an online portal that can be accessed or if the temperature goes out of range, emails are sent to the duty managers to investigate.
Hi! Yes, we do this in care home land here at St. Monica Trust. In our clinical rooms we record min and max temps for the fridges, and have a “normal” room thermometer to record the room temp in the afternoon when the room is likely to be at its hottest. CQC are painfully hot on it – we even had an inspector record the temp inside one of the cupboards in one of our clinical rooms once!! In many of our units, meds in current use are stored in residents’ rooms. Here we have taken a more pragmatic view. Every unit knows which rooms are the hottest eg those that get full sunlight in summer. So we record temp inside the meds cupboard in 2 of those rooms daily, and if there are out of range, we will then check temps in the rest of the rooms. We have given info about what actions to take if out of range as well, as sometimes people would record an out of range temp but fail to record any action. This is also audited monthly to ensure ongoing compliance.
