In the recently updated (11/4/22) UK HSA Health protection in education and childcare settings Chapter 2: I P & C. Under safe management of waste it states 'Any used PPE should be placed in a refuse bag and disposed of as normal domestic waste. '
Have I missed something? I teach I P & C to carers and education staff in a residential school for children with SEN and management of body fluids is a huge issue. I do appreciate the risk of infection in this area of practice is low, but its not zero and having started my career (admittedly a fair few years ago now) in a trust that was the first in the country to be prosecuted under H & S legislation for healthcare waste being found in the household waste stream. I am really unhappy advising that PPE should be disposed of in domestic waste stream. Would appreciate anyone's comments or direction.
