Insight Webinar: Genomic Surveillance and IPC

February 4, 2026, 3:00pm Online

Member Price: £0

This Insight Webinar, hosted by IPC Partners in partnership with the IPS and the Healthcare Infection Society (HIS), will focus on genomic surveillance and infection prevention and control (IPC).

Genomic surveillance offers powerful benefits for IPC, enabling early detection of outbreaks, tracking transmission pathways, and informing targeted interventions that improve patient safety.

The session will be led by Dr Alexander Sundermann, Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology. Dr Sundermann’s research focuses on the application of pathogen whole genome sequencing surveillance for the detection and investigation of healthcare-associated outbreaks. He also explores how machine learning algorithms can be applied to electronic health records to enhance outbreak detection and prevention.

Dr Sundermann and the Center for Genomic Epidemiology have pioneered a real-time whole genome sequencing surveillance programme, sequencing multiple patient infections each week to monitor for outbreaks and guide interventions to prevent spread. He is board certified in infection control and a Fellow of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control.

In this webinar, Dr Sundermann will provide an overview of the principles behind genomic surveillance, the evidence generated so far, and its growing role in IPC. He will also share insights into the practical aspects, including implementation strategies, real-world challenges, and the potential for genomic technologies to transform IPC programmes and strengthen patient safety.

Join us for this fascinating session and gain a deeper understanding of how genomics is shaping the future of infection prevention.
