About Amy Boden
Amy Boden has over 13 years of specialist experience in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and currently serves as Deputy Chief Nursing Officer across The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. Throughout her career, infection prevention has remained the foundation of her professional journey, shaping her leadership approach and commitment to improving patient safety and preventing avoidable harm.
Her career so far
Beginning her career as an Infection Prevention Nurse, Amy has worked across community, primary care, secondary care and mental health services, gaining extensive experience in surveillance, quality improvement and patient safety. Her current executive role sees her providing strategic leadership for quality, professional standards, workforce development and organisational improvement across two NHS organisations.
Her time at the IPS
Amy’s involvement with the Infection Prevention Society began in 2013 after joining the West Midlands Branch. Early in her IPC career, she participated in the Society’s Marian Reed Development Programme, describing it as a defining moment in her professional development. Inspired by the IPS Isolating Iris educational resource, she developed and implemented an infection prevention training programme within her organisation, receiving the programme award from Marian Reed herself. Amy credits this experience with strengthening her confidence as a practitioner and reinforcing the importance of education, collaboration and professional support.
Throughout her career, Amy has led a number of significant quality improvement initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped lead her Trust’s infection prevention response, supporting outbreak management, organisational resilience and the implementation of national guidance. She also played a key role in safely reintroducing hospital visiting and has championed innovative approaches to sustainability within healthcare, including initiatives to reduce unnecessary glove use, eliminate couch roll where appropriate and minimise single-use products while maintaining safe patient care.
Amy is passionate about developing the next generation of IPC professionals. She holds a Master’s degree in Professional Practice (Infection Prevention), contributes to postgraduate education as a guest lecturer and has spent the past decade supporting the IPS Marian Reed Development Programme. As West Midlands Branch Deputy Coordinator and later Branch Coordinator, she has helped strengthen member engagement through educational events, networking opportunities and branch conferences.
Vision for IPS
If elected as Vice President, Amy’s vision is for every IPS member, regardless of professional background, healthcare setting or career stage, to feel connected to an inclusive and supportive professional community. She is committed to strengthening leadership development, increasing member engagement, promoting research and innovation, and raising the profile of infection prevention within healthcare strategy and policy.
Amy believes the Society has an increasingly important role in supporting members to influence healthcare at every level while ensuring infection prevention remains central to improving patient outcomes. She hopes to use her strategic leadership experience, collaborative approach and passion for professional development to help the Society continue to innovate, inspire and influence the future of infection prevention.
