There is a lot of overlap between veterinary medicine and human medicine in terms of the equipment and medications used in animal species. In veterinary anaesthesia, particularly, a lot of equipment is reused between patients from a cost perspective. There is a lack of standardised cleaning protocols for consumables, such as endotracheal tubes and breathing systems, because much of the equipment in human medicine is designed to be used once. In this lecture, we will look at some of the challenges that this presents in our veterinary practices, as well as the available literature on infection prevention and control among patients.
Learning objectives
- Understand the veterinary-specific challenges associated with reusing single-use equipment.
- Review the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for monitoring and support equipment.
This session will be facilitated by Gemma Cooper and Danielle Banks.
