High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) Critical Care Transfer Services

NHS England’s Specialised Services would like to seek your views on a draft new service specification. There are two separate service specifications, one for children and one for adults.

The purpose of High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) Critical Care Transfer Services is the safe and effective transfer of patients with diseases that are known or suspected to be transmissible from person to person via the airborne route or contact route.

Around one patient every 3-5 years might need this service. There are a small number of units across the country. Patients are transferred to HCID units follow a confirmed diagnosis. For paediatrics, patients with a strong likelihood of a positive diagnosis may be considered for transfer. Some patients may require critical care supported transfers.

This proposal will improve the care and outcomes for adults and children with an HCID who need to be admitted to a specialist HCID unit and who need critical care support during the transfer. There are currently no commissioned services currently for this cohort.

Your input is critical to the development of effective and meaningful national standards.

The draft new service specifications and an equalities and health inequalities assessment (EHIA) set out what is being proposed.
