IPS Chief Executive Dr Alex Rhys awarded OBE in New Year Honours

The Infection Prevention Society is delighted to announce that our Chief Executive, Dr Alex Rhys, has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year Honours 2026, recognising his services to healthcare and the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr Rhys became the Society’s first Chief Executive in August 2024 and has since led IPS through a significant period of organisational development. Over the past 16 months, he has strengthened governance, modernised operations and enhanced the way the Society supports members working across health and care settings to prevent infection and protect patients.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Rhys said:
“It is an honour to receive this recognition. Infection prevention professionals play a vital role in reducing avoidable harm and improving patient safety, and IPS is proud to support their work across the UK. I am grateful to the members, volunteers and colleagues who contribute so much to this field.”

Prof Steve Hams MBE MStJ, Chair of the IPS Board of Trustees, added:
“Alex has shaped the Infection Prevention Society with thoughtful, values-led leadership that has strengthened our voice and influence across health and care. This honour reflects not only his contribution to IPS, but a career dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes. We are immensely proud of him, and this recognition is richly deserved.”

Alongside his role at IPS, Dr Rhys is the founder and CEO of It Gets Better UK, a national charity that uses positive LGBTQ+ storytelling to support young people at vulnerable moments. His contribution to both healthcare and community support has been acknowledged through this prestigious award.

IPS extends its warmest congratulations to Dr Rhys and looks forward to continuing its work with him, the IPS staff team, branches, networks and members to champion excellence in infection prevention and control.
