Dr Cat Makison Booth is a microbiologist by training with over 20 years’ experience of working within biological safety, including the inspection of high containment facilities and provision of bespoke research for risk mitigation strategies. She has worked for the UK Health and Safety Executive, WHO, and currently serves as the portfolio holder for IPC Research for the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team within UKHSA.
Cat has been collaboratively responsible for the development of PPE-related guidance including:
- the WHO Laboratory biosafety manual, 4th edition and PPE monograph,
- the UK’s viral haemorrhagic fevers risk assessment following the 2013 Ebola outbreak, and
- guidance on the use of respiratory and facial protection equipment following experiences with SARS and 2009 H1N1 pandemic.
Cat is best known for developing a simulated vomiting system (Vomiting Larry), which has since been adapted for the training and evaluation of PPE ensembles when managing patients with suspected HCIDs.
