About

Tracey Gauci, RGN, BSc, MSc has been an active member of the IPS (formerly the Infection Control Nurses Association) since 1992 and a member of the Welsh Branch since 1997. She was awarded honorary membership of the IPS in 2018 and went on to be the proud recipient of the Brendon Moore award in 2023.

Tracey was inspired to specialise in IPC during her nurse training at Charing Cross Hospital London by one of her tutors, the late Professor Robert Pratt. After almost ten years in IPC, firstly in Peterborough and then in her home town of Bridgend, S Wales, Tracey was invited into Welsh Government initially to take up a two year secondment looking at ‘clean hospitals’. Two years became fifteen as she took up the post of Nursing Officer for Communicable Diseases leading on policy and professional advice specifically around healthcare associated infections and decontamination, deputising as the Chief Nursing Officer on a number of occasions. One of her particular interests is environmental decontamination. In 2010, Tracey was invited to be a patron to the Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals, a role she was proud to hold until stepping down in 2023.

Tracey returned to the NHS as an Assistant Director of Nursing (2015-2017) before joining Gama Healthcare as their Clinical Director – a role she really enjoyed and learnt a lot from and which gave her the opportunity to travel and appreciate IPC from a global perspective. During the pandemic she found herself returning to the NHS once again as Consultant Practitioner, Infection Prevention at Hywel Dda University Health Board (south west Wales).
